Probably of the sub-species cabanidis based on location. In all, four sub-species are presently recognised:
thalassinus (Mexican Violet-ear) - Central and South Mexico to North Central Nicaragua.
cabanidis - Costa Rica and West Panama.
cyanotus (Mountain Violet-ear) - Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
crissalis - Andes of Peru and Bolivia, and North West Argentina.
